INTRODUCTION

In today’s fast-evolving healthcare environment, efficient management of hospital operations is essential to ensure quality patient care and smooth administrative processes. Hospitals deal with large volumes of patient data, appointments, medical records, and billing operations, making manual management inefficient and error-prone.

HospitalCare is a comprehensive hospital management system developed to address these challenges. It provides an intuitive and centralized platform for managing patient information, scheduling appointments, handling billing, and coordinating hospital staff across multiple departments.

By integrating core hospital functions into a single application, HospitalCare enables healthcare providers to improve efficiency, reduce errors, enhance patient experience, and ensure better decision-making through real-time data access.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

  • No single platform efficiently integrates patient management, appointment scheduling, billing, and staff coordination in one place.
  • Existing hospital systems are either overly complex or lack essential features like real-time updates and centralized data management.
  • Manual record-keeping leads to data loss, scheduling conflicts, delays in treatment, and billing inaccuracies.

OBJECTIVES

  • To develop a full-stack web application that integrates patient management, appointment scheduling, and billing into a single platform.
  • To implement secure user authentication using Firebase to protect sensitive patient and hospital data.
  • To enable real-time data access for patient records, appointments, and hospital operations.
  • To provide multi-department management allowing efficient coordination between doctors, staff, and administrative units.

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

Hospital Care follows a three-tier client-server architecture:

Tier 1 — Frontend (React):
Users interact with the system through a React-based Single Page Application (SPA) that includes modules such as Dashboard, Patients, Doctors, Appointments, Billing, and Departments. Base44 Authentication is used for secure login and issues an ID token that is attached to every API request for authorization.

The system supports multiple user roles and workflows, including Admin, Doctor, and Receptionist, each having role-based access to different functionalities.

The system follows a multi-layered architecture consisting of the Presentation Layer, Service Layer, and Data Layer, supported by cloud services for authentication and system operations.

Presentation Layer: Handles user interface components, dashboards, forms, and navigation using React and Tailwind CSS.

  • Service Layer: Contains business logic, validation (AJV/JSON schema), and API communication for managing patients, appointments, billing, and departments.
  • Data Layer: Manages data storage using a backend or database, handling CRUD operations for all hospital entities.

Cloud services are used for:

Authentication: Base44 for secure user login and access control

ARCHITECTURE OVERVIEW

The Hospital Management System follows a three-tier client-server architecture where a React frontend communicates with backend services via RESTful APIs, supported by a database for structured data storage.

Base44 Authentication handles secure user identity on both the client and server side, with every API request verified using authentication tokens. The system manages all business logic, data validation, and CRUD operations through a structured service layer.

The architecture is designed to support real-time hospital operations such as patient management, appointment scheduling, and billing, ensuring efficient and reliable system performance.

PRESENTATION LAYER (FRONTEND)

The frontend of the Hospital Management System is built using React, providing a dynamic and responsive Single Page Application (SPA).

Authentication is handled using Base44, which issues a secure token attached to every API request for authorization.

The interface is organized into key modules:

  • Dashboard — Overview of hospital operations
  • Patients — Patient records and details
  • Doctors — Doctor profiles and specialization
  • Appointments — Scheduling and management
  • Billing — Invoice and payment tracking
  • Departments — Hospital department management

The UI is styled using Tailwind CSS, ensuring a clean, responsive, and user-friendly interface across devices.

AUTHENTICATION AND NOTIFICATION LAYER

Authentication:
The system uses Base44 Authentication for secure identity management. On login, a secure token is generated and attached to every API request. The backend verifies this token before processing any request. Invalid or expired tokens result in unauthorized access responses.

Notification:
The system uses toast notifications to provide real-time feedback:

  • Success alerts (e.g., appointment created, patient added)
  • Error alerts (e.g., validation or API failure)

AUTHENTICATION AND USER LAYER

The system ensures secure access and proper data handling for all users.

Authentication Flow:

Users log in via Base44, which generates a secure token stored on the client side. This token is automatically attached to all API requests.

Token Verification:

Each request passes through authentication middleware. If valid, the user is authorized; otherwise, access is denied.

User Roles & Data Isolation:

The system supports multiple roles:

Admin — Full system control

Doctor — Access to appointments and patient records

Receptionist — Handles scheduling and billing

Each user’s data is securely isolated to ensure privacy and controlled access.
