Urban Transportation Governance, Accessibility, and Spatial Economic Development: A systematic Review of Spillover Effects in Secondary Cities of Ethiopia

ABSTRACT This paper examines the relationships between urban transport governance, accessibility and spatial economic development in Ethiopia with a focus on spillover effects in secondary cities. It grounded in spatial economic theory and accessibility frameworks, the paper integrates empirical evidence from Ethiopian cities and comparable developing country contexts. Using qualitative analytical approach based on a total of approximately 40 theoretical and empirical studies were systematically reviewed, together with key policy reports and institutional publications, the study finds that transport investments generate significant positive spillover such as market integration, labor mobility, and productivity achievements ,but these effects are uneven due to centralized governance , weak institutional coordination and infrastructure disparities. The study conclude that while, effective urban transportation governance and transportation accessibility have a major impact on spatial economic development, regional disparities in Ethiopia still caused by poor institutional coordination and unequal accessibility. To promote balanced sustainable regional growth, authorities should enhance institutional coordination, strength investment in secondary cities, and expand integrated accessibility based transportation planning. By connecting theory with empirical observations and recommending policy paths for attaining balanced regional development, the work adds to the body of literature.

GIS and Remote Sensing-Based Suitable Site Selection for Solid Waste Disposal: The Case of Yirgachefe Town, Gedeo Zone, Southern Ethiopia

ABSTRACT Yirgachefe Town uses an inappropriate dumping site; solid waste management and disposal are major issues. The use of GIS and remote sensing techniques in a weighted overlay analysis technique is crucial to choose an appropriate dumping site for solid waste disposal since landfill selection is a crucial issue. Effective strategies for lowering environmental risk and human health issues include choosing an appropriate disposal site and creating a future appropriate area map. This study's primary goal was to choose a suitable site for Yirgachefe Town that is socially, environmentally, and economically acceptable using GIS and remote sensing. The orthophotography picture was used to process site selection parameters such as land use and land cover, settlement area, road, and river; restricted area was gathered from the ground survey; and elevation and slope were processed from the 30-meter-resolution SRTM DEM and generated in a GIS context. After standardizing each factor, the corresponding factor maps were combined in weighted overlay analysis using the Arc GIS environment, with the computed Eigen vector serving as a coefficient. The landfill area was selected using the Euclidean distance layers of each map and assigned a ranking order, like highly suitable, moderately suitable, less suitable, and unsuitable for a solid waste dumping area, respectively. The major finding of the suitable site selection map of the study indicated that, among the total area covered with 2557 hectares of land, 1.11 hectares (0.05%) were considered as a highly suitable area, 72.36 hectares (2.83%) of the land fell under moderately suitable, 362.90 hectares (14.19%) of the land fell under a less suitable area, and 2120.63 hectares (82.93%) of the land fell under an unsuitable area for a solid waste dumping site. Conclude that rapid population growth and economic advancement have led to an increase in solid waste output. Additionally, because of the complexity of the study area or agroforestry, the chosen small candidate site will not lessen the hazards to human health and the environment. Therefore, biological reprocessing techniques like compost and manure for urban agriculture, urban greenery, nurseries, etc. might help the relevant organizations like local Farmer Training Centers (FTC), the Environmental Protection Authority Department (EPAD), and urban agricultural users.
